About Us

The Original Sock Bank Company was founded by Shirley Chewick almost two decades ago to preserve and pass on her parents’ lessons about saving money and creating wealth.

The idea to bring her mother’s legacy to the public struck her when she was cleaning out her family home. In an old but well preserved family trunk she found the original sock her mother knitted over 40 years before. It was then that she decided to take her family heirloom and make it available to children of all ages.

Shirley was born in Creighton Mines, a small town outside of Sudbury Ontario. She is a pioneer in Infection Control in Canada and was advisor to the World Health Organization. To pursue her dream, she happily retired as a researcher and consultant from the National Advisory Council on Ageing. She lives in the heart of Ottawa with her calico cat, Ginger Bear, her cuddly puddle of love.

Lori Mockson is a native of Brooklyn New York. She moved to Canada in 2002 with her Canadian-born husband David Burcsik. She also has a 4-year-old son named Max. Her writing is well-served by her education in English Literature from Hofstra University along with her experience as a book editor at Paperjacks and as former publisher of Twentyfour7 magazine – a student survival guide to more than 50 US colleges.

About the Sock Bank

The Sock Bank is the faithful reproduction of the sock our founder, Shirley Chewick’s mother knitted for her to save coins in when she was a young girl.

Our socks are knitted in Canada using rag wool, just like Shirley's mother used all those years ago. A patented quarter-sawn hardwood coin slot is a perfect fit for the rustic and grey coloured sock. The 6" long Sock Bank is made with great attention to detail giving it a wonderful turn of the century feel.
